Ophthalmology service at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital is run
by Dr. Tony Basher, the only practicing veterinarian who is a Diplomate of the
America College of Veterinary Surgeons and the American College of
Veterinary Ophthalmologists.
The
Ophthalmology service at VSH is well
equipped with an operating microscope, diode and CO2 lasers, and cryosurgery. A
new, state-of-the-art phacoemulsifier is available for cataract surgery. Dr.
Basher provides eye certification examinations (CERF) for inheritable eye
problems in dogs. He performs soft tissue surgeries, focusing on reconstructive
surgery, microsurgery, and procedures of the head and neck. With strong
experience in the management of both medical and surgical disorders of the eye,
Dr. Basher has a strong commitment of service to his clients and patients and

| Dr. Tony Basher
is the only practicing veterinarian who is a Diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists and
the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He is also
a Diplomate of the Small Animal Surgery (soft tissue) in the Royal College of
Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Basher has special interest in soft tissue surgery
with emphasis in ophthalmic surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and
head and neck surgery. He is skilled in soft tissue procedures, microsurgical
techniques and cryosurgery. In addition to managing medical and surgical eye
diseases, Dr. Basher provides eye certification examinations (CERF) for dogs.
Dr.
Basher graduated with distinction from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London in 1981.
He completed an internship at the University of Pennsylvania, and a
three-year surgical residency with a Masters degree at the Western College of
Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. For
several years, Dr. Basher was a tenured professor of surgery at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince
Edward Island. Dr. Basher has authored
numerous scientific articles, reviews, and book chapters in surgery and
ophthalmology. He maintains a research interest in wound healing. Dr. Basher is
a reviewer for the journal of Veterinary Surgery, serves on committees for the American College of Veterinary
Ophthalmologists and speaks at international, national and local meetings.
